High level cleaning: what it covers and when you need it

What counts as high level

Anything a cleaner cannot reach safely from the floor with standard equipment. In practice that means the following areas.

• Structural beams, trusses and exposed ceilings
• Ducting, pipework and cable trays
• Light fittings and diffusers, which lose brightness as dust builds up
• Tops of racking, lockers, cupboards and partitions
• High ledges, signage and window heads
• Internal glazing, atriums and high-level windows
• Extractor grilles and ventilation outlets

Why it matters

Dust at height is not just unsightly. In warehouses it settles on stock and packaging. In kitchens and food areas, falling dust is a contamination risk. In gyms and busy venues, dust combined with humidity creates stale smells. Heavy accumulations of dust near light fittings and electrical equipment are also a recognised fire risk, which is why high-level cleaning often appears in a building's periodic maintenance plan.

How it is carried out

The work runs from top to bottom so dust is never dropped onto a surface that has already been cleaned. Loose dust is vacuumed with extended equipment rather than brushed, because brushing just redistributes it through the air. Greasy deposits, common near kitchens, are wiped with a suitable degreaser. Stock, machinery and desks below are protected or cleared, and the floor clean follows once the high-level work is finished.

Access and safety

Working at height is planned rather than improvised. The method depends on the height, what is underneath and the building layout, and the plan is agreed with the site before work starts. Areas below are cordoned off while work is overhead. Our commercial work is covered by £5m public liability insurance and full employer's liability.

Planning it into a contract

High-level cleaning is best written into a commercial cleaning contract as a periodic task with a stated interval, so it happens rather than being remembered once a problem is visible. Many sites time it for a quiet period, a planned shutdown or just before an audit or inspection. It sits alongside other periodic work such as carpet cleaning and floor machine scrubbing.

Signs it is overdue

Grey fluff hanging from ducting, light that seems dimmer than it used to, a film of dust reappearing on desks the morning after a clean, and visible cobwebs in corners of high ceilings are all signs that high-level dust is feeding back into the room below.

Kitchens and food areas

Above cooking areas, dust mixes with airborne grease and forms a sticky layer on ducting, canopies and beams. That layer holds more dust over time and can drop into food preparation areas. It needs a degreaser rather than dry dusting, and it is best done during a closure so the kitchen can be cleaned straight afterwards. Kitchen extraction ducting internals are a specialist job, separate from the external high-level clean.

Offices and retail

In offices and shops, high-level cleaning is usually lighter: tops of partitions and cupboards, light diffusers, air vents and high glass. It still matters, because dust on vents and fittings is what redistributes across desks and shelves overnight.
