Cleaning a property after a refurbishment

Construction dust is finer than household dust and stays airborne for days. Clean too early and you clean twice; clean in the wrong order and you move dust from high surfaces onto floors you have already finished.

Cleaning a property after a refurbishment

Why it happens

Plaster, MDF and cement dust settles slowly and hides in tracks, sockets, radiator fins and joinery gaps. Every time a door closes or heating comes on, more of it lands.

What to do about it

Sequence matters more than effort on this one.

  • Wait until every trade including snagging has genuinely finished
  • Remove protection sheeting, tape and stickers first, before any wet work
  • Work strictly top down: ceilings and light fittings, then walls, then joinery, then floors
  • Vacuum with HEPA filtration rather than sweeping, which re-suspends the dust
  • Do a second pass on tracks, sockets, hinges and radiator backs
  • Finish glass and hard floors last, once nothing above them is outstanding

The mistake to avoid

Do not book the clean before snagging. A returning joiner or decorator undoes a full day's work in twenty minutes.

How we handle it

Construction dust gets into everything and standard cleaning doesn't touch it. We do proper after-builders cleans: paint spots removed, dust lifted from every surface, and the property handed back genuinely liveable.

  • HEPA vacuum on plaster dust
  • Solvent on paint splashes
  • Micro-fibre wet-wipe pass over every horizontal surface
  • Grout wash on new tiling

Questions people ask

How many passes does it take?

Two is normal on a full refurbishment: a dust-removal pass, then a detail pass once remaining dust has settled.

Do you remove paint splashes and adhesive residue?

Yes, where the surface allows it safely. We test in an inconspicuous spot before treating any finished surface.

Can you work alongside trades still on site?

We can, but we will tell you it costs more and delivers less than cleaning after they finish.
