Why it happens
Leaves, moss and grit build up at low points and around outlets. Once the outlet is restricted the gutter fills, overtops at the joints and soaks the wall directly beneath.

Diagnose before you spend money on remedial work.
- Watch the gutters during heavy rain and note exactly where the water spills
- Check hoppers and downpipes as well as the run — blockages sit lower than people expect
- Clear the full run and the outlets, not just the visible debris
- Check joints and brackets while the gutter is empty
- Flush through to confirm the downpipe actually runs clear
- Recheck after the first heavy rainfall to confirm the fix
The mistake to avoid
Do not commission damp-proofing work on a high external wall stain before ruling out the gutter above it. The order of investigation saves a lot of money.
