Why it happens
Organic residue on the bin surfaces breaks down bacterially, which produces the odour and attracts flies. Warm weather accelerates it, and a sealed bin store concentrates it because the air never moves.
What to do about it
Set the rota by waste type and season rather than waiting for a complaint.
- Food and general waste: fortnightly through summer, four-weekly through winter
- Mixed hospitality waste: fortnightly year round, as the residue load stays high
- Dry mixed recycling: monthly, or quarterly on genuinely clean streams
- Bin store floors and surrounds cleaned on the same visit as the bins
- Schedule the clean straight after collection day, while bins are empty
- Treat the odour at source with sanitiser, rather than spraying fragrance over it
- Keep a visit record, which is what environmental health and managing agents ask to see
The mistake to avoid
Avoid deodorising sprays and bleach poured into a full bin. It masks the smell for a day and does nothing to the residue causing it.
How we handle it
Commercial bins turn from a housekeeping detail into a real problem quickly. We clean, deodorise and sanitise wheelie bins, euro bins and bin stores on a fixed rota, so the smell, the flies and the drainage staining never get the chance to build up. Every visit is logged, so you have a record for landlords, environmental health and your own audits.
- High-pressure hot wash on bin interiors
- Sanitiser dwell before final rinse
- Odour neutraliser rather than fragrance masking
- Waste water captured and disposed of responsibly
