Problem guide

Signs your gutters need clearing

A blocked gutter rarely announces itself. It shows up as a stain, a smell of damp or a patch of green on the wall long before anyone sees water coming over the edge.

Signs your gutters need clearing

Why it happens

Debris settles at the outlet first, so the run holds water permanently. That standing water finds the weakest joint, then tracks down the fascia and into the wall behind it.

What to do about it

Check for these from the ground, ideally during heavy rain when a blockage shows itself.

  • Water spilling over the back or side of the gutter during rain
  • Vertical staining or green algae streaks down the wall below a joint
  • Plants, grass or moss growing out of the gutter run
  • Sagging sections, or brackets pulling away from the fascia
  • Peeling paint and soft timber on fascia or soffit boards
  • Damp patches on upstairs internal walls, or a musty smell in a bedroom
  • Birds nesting in the run, which blocks it completely
  • A downpipe that stays silent in heavy rain when it should be running
  • Pooling or splashback along the ground line by the wall

The mistake to avoid

Do not just clear the visible gutter and stop. If the downpipe is blocked the run fills again on the next shower, so the pipe has to be tested as well.

Questions people ask

Can a blocked gutter really cause damp inside?

Yes. Persistent overflow saturates the wall, and on solid or older stone walls that shows internally as damp patches and staining.

What if you find broken gutter or rotten fascia?

We photograph it and tell you plainly. We quote separately for repair and there is no pressure to take it.

Can you clear a bird nest?

Yes, outside nesting season. If a nest is active we come back rather than disturb it.

How long does a typical house take?

A standard semi is usually under an hour, including downpipe testing and the before-and-after footage.
